On November 28, 2007 the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) called upon international donors to contribute urgently to a new three-year, $98 million program to help fight hunger in Indonesia. WFP has not received significant contributions towards this program and may need to suspend or significantly reduce their efforts to provide assistance to Indonesia unless funding is pledged soon. In the past year, 845,000 Indonesians have received WFP food assistance in areas including West Timor, Lombok, Madura, East Java and Greater Jakarta.
Tony Banbury, Asia Regional Director for WFP, said "Hunger is still a very real threat for too many poor Indonesians." According to the WFP, approximately 13 million children under five are malnourished in Indonesia, and as many as 30 percent of children under the age of five are severely malnourished in some of the poorest areas of the country. For more information:
At first reading the article I thought $98 million was a lot to be asking for in one year, but reading farther on I realized how much that money is actually needed to help the Indonesian people. I hope when this program advertises from money that they but information about the Indonesian people, like they did in this article. With people seeing about the amount of malnourished children there that should really help being in money.
The sad thing is, is that Indonesian people are not the only people that have malnourished children or who are in big need of food. I wish there programs like this one asking for that much money because that amount of money would make a difference there, and will hopefully spread the word to different cultures and programs to get more help.

When I hear about countries that are suffering from hunger what upsets me the most is innocent children who are affected because of it. It is extremely sad that they are born into these conditions and have to suffer because of something they have no control over. 13 million children under the age of five who have done nothing wrong are malnourished in Indonesia. That is just a crazy amount, no child should have to go through this ever. Which is why I don't understand why the WFP has not received significant contributions yet. Do people honestly not care and do they not see how urgent this issue is? Indonesians are not the only people who are facing hunger, there is hunger all over the world and we have to start making more of an effort if we want to end hunger.

The colaboration of the UN with different agencies to raise money for world hunger is exactly what is needed. It is good to see the UN getting involved in areas it can really impact. This is an amazing thing.

You think of $98 million as an astronomical amount of money to be used to supply people with food, but looking at the cost of food itself and how many people there are that are in need of this support it just does not even out.

$98 million may not be the entire solution but if that $98 million is used effectively and efficiently it can go a long way.
